Arsenal’s Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that he tried to convince his international teammate Robert Lewandowski to join him at Arsenal. The Lewandowski transfer saga has been running for a long time and recently came to an end with the player deciding to move to Bayern Munich on a free transfer. His contract with Borussia Dortmund comes to an end in the summer and the German club announced several months ago that he is free to leave at the end of the season. A number of clubs have been after him due to the attractive nature of his transfer.

Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Real Madrid were thought to be interested in his services, but it has been the Bavarian outfit who have won the race for his signature. Lewandowski is thought to have signed a five-year contract worth around A? 10 million per year. Arsenal were very keen on him in order to enter the search for a striker to assist Giroud, who has been the club’s lone striker for much of this campaign. Even though Lukas Podolski can also play as a striker, Arsene Wenger has been reluctant to use him in this position.

Szczesny says that he has an excellent relationship with Lewandowski and he tried to convince him to move to Arsenal.

“Lewandowski has been my friend for a very long time. I tried my best [to get him to join Arsenal]. I think Santi’s always been a very important player for us and when he plays like he did [against Fulham] he’s one of the best in the Premier League. We’re very happy to have him and delighted for him because he’s not scored a lot of goals and he was getting a bit frustrated so this will be a very enjoyable game for him,” Szczesny said.
