CAN LEWANDOWSKI BREAK BUNDESLIGA RECORD?

One of the major questions to be answered in the final three set of games in the German Bundesliga involves Poland striker Robert Lewandowski and whether the Bayern Munich star can break the record for the number of goals scored in the German Bundesliga in a single season.

Bayern Munich and German football great Gerd Muller holds the record with 40 goals in a season. Poland national team skipper Robert Lewandowski is on 36 goals ahead of the final three games. To this effect, he needs five goals from those three matches to set the record starting with the Borussia Moenchengladbach game this weekend.

Poland striker Lewandowski could have added to his tally of 36 goals to move closer to the record if not for the knee injury that made him miss four games in the league. He missed six games in all competitions as a result of the injury including the Champions League quarterfinal games against French Ligue 1 club PSG.

Without Lewandowski in the quarterfinal tie with Paris Saint Germain (PSG), Bayern were knocked out of the competition as defending champions via the away goals rule.

Lewandowski missed the games against title rivals RB Leipzig (1-0 away win for Bayern), Union Berlin (1-1), VFL Wolfsburg (3-2 away win) and Bayer Leverkusen 2-0). He was on 35 goals at the start of the four games missed as a result of the knee injury sustained against Andorra in the colours of Poland when the two countries met in a Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The Poland national team player took his tally to 36 goals with the lone Bayern goal in the 2-1 loss at Mainz 05 in the last game for the Bavarian giants. It was his first game back from injury.

Lewandowski has the Borussia Moenchengladbach, Freiburg and Augsburg games to try and break the record of 40 Bundesliga goals in a season.
