Lewandowski ensured that Bayern retained their German Bundesliga title as he scored a record 41 goals thereby breaking the record for the number of goals in a single Bundesliga season previously set by Bayern Munich and German football great Gerd Muller around five decades ago. The 32-year-old Poland national team player left it late until the final minute of the final game of the season against Augsburg to break the 40-goal Bundesliga record set by Muller during the 1971/72 season. Muller went on to match the tally he has set few seasons later.

Poland national team skipper Lewandowski finished as the topscorer in the Bundesliga last season but was beaten to the European Golden Shoe by Lazio striker Ciro Immobile who scored 36 goals for his club in the Italian Serie A.
